Stories of a mid-life bikini competitor mom
At one time I had pierced ears, but with small children, I grew out of the habit of wearing them and now the holes have closed. I’d love them get them re-pierced but haven’t gotten around to it, and here we are, just weeks away from show.

Body Polish, Prom Jewelry and Working my Butt Off

I had a sapphire blue prom dress my senior year.

Blue has consistently been my favorite color, and I loved the dark blue/black shimmer this one had. It was 1990, and back then we bought shoes to match, so they were blue too. To accessorize, I looked for rhinestone jewelry to complement it.

We didn’t have Claire’s in the late 80s, early 90s (at least not in my locale) so I searched high and low for a cheap rhinestone necklace and matching earrings. I finally found some (maybe JcPenney’s?).

Recently I found out that bikini competitors wear blingy jewelry on stage. I’m not sure why I never noticed this fact before. I suppose I was focused more on the conditioning, the posing, the poise, etc of each competitor and not on what their earrings looked like.

I strolled over the The Shoe Fairy again to see the jewelry they had. While beautiful, I really didn’t want to drop $30 on a pair of earrings — especially clip on earrings.

At one time I had pierced ears, but with small children, I grew out of the habit of wearing them and now the holes have closed. I’d love them get them re-pierced but haven’t gotten around to it, and here we are, just weeks away from show.

Cheap rhinestone clip on earrings, I googled.

Low and behold, they do still make them. I scrolled through a site that seemed to sell “dancing jewelry” and found a pair of dangly, blingy, rhinestone clip-ons, and a bracelet to boot — all for well under the $30 including shipping.

All of these little details feel like they are adding up and I’m trying not to get overwhelmed as I navigate a little blindly.

Looking at the tanning site that provides the spray on tans at the venue, I notice there is a WHOLE SKIN PREP that is supposed to be started four weeks out from show. Well — we are at three so I guess better late than never.

Apparently I need to purchase body polish (can get it at Walmart) to start exfoliating my skin, and a recommended brand of moisturizing soap. Added to my to-do list.

On top of all of these little things like bling and polish, my cardio has gone UP and my calories have gone DOWN. I am trying to be creative like I mentioned in my last blog, but the fact is, I’m hungry — I’m hungry often. And I’m exhausted.

My mornings include half of my cardio (currently today that was 30 minutes on the treadmill) and my evenings include the other half after my gym session (will be another 25 minutes). All of those hard-earned glute gains seem to be getting shaved off with each swish swish of the treadmill belt.

I’m quite literally working my butt off.

I walk the puppy typically once a day. I have meals to cook, a job to do, a house to clean, bills to pay and kids and a partner to be there for, emotionally and mentally.

I hear often how hard prep can be.

And…it is. Although I feel like I am doing it. I’m getting through, blingy and exfoliated.
